At Amazon: Zyliss Lettuce Knife
At Amazon: Zyliss Lettuce Knife
In the comments of a recent post on kid-friendly knives, Emma mentioned that her kids safely chop and slice using a plastic lettuce knife. Brilliant!

This Zyliss lettuce knife is inexpensive, easy to handle, and will let your kids do actual productive work in the kitchen.

Thank you, Emma!

You are very welcome! To give credit where it is due, we first discovered these through the Portland Farmers Market "Kids Cook" program when we happened upon a drop-in kids' cooking activity while we were there on vacation. http://www.portlandfarmersmarket.org/index.php/programs-and-services/kids-cook-at-the-market/

I think this is a great idea, but I purchased one of these "lettuce" knives a few years ago for my own children and while demonstrating to my (then) seven year old daughter how to cut lettuce-of all things-with it, the knife slipped and I cut myself badly-almost needed stitches. When I was telling my father (who is an expert in all types of knives) he told me that the lettuce knives can actually cut skin easier than a metal blade and go deeper.

Since then I've disposed of the lettuce knife and my children use small paring knives to help cut. At six and ten they haven't cut themselves yet-and neither have I.

Me and my friend were arguing about an problem similar to this! Now I realize that I had been correct. lol! Thank you for that information you

article.
