We needed a childproofing solution for our wireless router, which plugs in to the wall outlet and sticks out further than any store-bought outlet shields could cover. I took a plastic colander and screwed through the side flange handles, bending it just a bit to let the cord through the bottom opening without pinching it against the wall. Ta dah! Air can circulate so it doesn't get too hot, and it's protected from our toddler. Plus, it gets many laughs when guests finally realize that there is a colander screwed to our wall.
