DIY custom coloring books with Google's image search for line drawings

Obama line artDaniel just pointed out that you can specify "line drawings" while searching Google for images (here's an example). He suggested this as a way to build your own custom coloring books. So smart! Now I can indulge my daughter's Obama obsession! (Ever since the election, she's been coloring over every one of his pictures in the newspaper.)

That's AWESOME! It's practically impossible to find hockey coloring books in the DC area, but now I can make my own! Thanks for the hack.

That is a really creative idea -- I wonder if there is a free program out there that would turn photos into line drawings like that -- then you could do a book of family members or friends. Anyone know?

Great idea for a rainy day! Thanks for the awesome tip, I am off to find some dinosaurs and other fun animals.

It may be useful to know that not all brands of inkjet printer ink are certified non-toxic for children, (I believe some Epson products are certified non-toxic.) I would want to check the website of my printer manufacturer before handing my son or daughter a stack of paper with ink on it. Unlike coloring books, printer ink is considered an office product, not a toy, and so it does not need to be tested for toxicity or lead.

I don't know about a free program, but I have used photoshop to take some family pictures and turn them into line drawings last year for Christmas for a custom family colouring book. It was a hit.

I've been playing around with TuxPaint a bit this last week, and have been looking for some decent line art to add as starter templates for my 4-year-old. Thanks for the tip on locating source material via google. (I really should have thought of this myself.) :)
