Mini pizza pan as "lipped" food plate for kids
Yet another good suggestion for "lipped" toddler food plates! This one from Melissa:
Between plastic being unsafe and ceramic being, well, ceramic, I was a bit lost as to what to use for my toddler's plates and cups. Enter the nearest restaurant supply store. I picked up some 6-inch diameter personal pizza plates - with the added bonus of built-in lips - and some little creamers for cups. They work great! Just by keeping an open mind about what works, you can find some really good stuff for quite cheap. (A lot of the stuff was stainless steel at the one I went to, but some was aluminum, so pay attention if that freaks you out.)

Corelle dishes also work well for toddlers - they're a type of ceramic, but are almost indestructible. You can usually buy individual pieces at discount stores. Plus, they come in plain white or simple patterns and can be used for adults without screaming "Elmo."
We bought some Corelle plates and bowls when my daughter was a baby, and she's now 7 and they're going strong.

Seconding the Corelle. I've also had good luck hitting up thrift stores for old '70s-style wooden bowls and plates. They're ugly but durable. Dishwasher safe-ish, but after a while they start to crack, so I usually handwash them.
