Family camping hack: The first time, keep it simple, make a list, borrow what you can

Preparing for a family camping trip doesn't have to involved spending hundreds on gear. As Gregory says:

Start off simple and cheap. Borrow (or post on FreeCycle for) any equipment you need. Take it from there.

Organization is the key. Rose does it the old-fashioned way: with a list:

I'm a list person and last year I had a great long list for packing when we went camping. When we got home, I wrote down the things that we forgot or needed replacing before we went camping again. We're going in 3 weeks and I've just dug out the list again, and it's perfect, because I know it has everything we need, plus I know what we need to buy before we go!

Here's a good starting point for must-have camping gear. Anything to add?
