Insect repellant wristband keeps mosquitoes away safely
Deb passed along this kid-friendly alternative to chemical mosquito repellant:
My little girl can't stand having anything on her skin, including sunscreen, and I hate coating her in toxic bug repellents. But she's one of those mosquito-magnet types. So now she just puts on an insect repellant wristband and she's covered. They've got a mild citrus-y odor but don't make her smell like she fell into a citronella candle or anything. They last about 100 hours and come in a re-sealable bag. I just love them -- with Spring Break and camp right around the corner, I'm stocking up.
She later sent me this PS:
Sometimes I hang the wristbands on chairs while we're sitting out on the patio and they work well, too.

What a great idea! Hope it really works! We rent a cottage in Michigan a couple times a summer, and by August the mosquitos are so bad in the early evening we don't even enjoy the outdoors because I hate to spray repellant all over my son.

This sounds wonderful! Just fyi you can get a smaller package at the Bug Bam website (Amazon has a case of 12 that's why it's so pricey) http://www.bugbam.com/us/site/
I almost can't wait for bug season to try it!

I've used citronella infused plastic wristbands for years- esp on my babes. They work as well as... citronella on a small part of your body. Don't count on it to be good enough to avoid West Nile virus. Also, I have one child on whom they work... not at all.
If there was a magic method to avoid mosquitoes it would make headlines.

These really do work. I saw the owner of this company on TV (he's Australian) and got some last year. Good reminder for me to re-stock -- I think they're available at Wal-mart, too, but not too sure about that.

Sorry to report that I have found that these don't work very well at all. Maybe Michigan mosquitos are more robust than the rest of the country. They are a better than nothing, but not much better.

I hope people you moms don't confuse this product with another called Bug Band. I used both products and the Bug Band does not work at all.. I was reluctant to try another wristband product but I was very surprised that the Bug Bam! wristbands actually worked great and the smell of the bands smell good also. The other product smell was almost as bad the mosquitoes biting us. Please do not confuse the 2 products. BUG BAM! works...

Being ultra sensitive to mosquito bites myself, I stumbled upon something that works like a charm: Oatmeal! that's right. make a paste of colloidal oatmeal - the kind that comes in packages marketed as oatmeal bath, then dab it on the bite. It works great, and lasts for hours. Only problem is it is a bit messy. Works for me better than hydrocortisone cream - it seems to draw out the inflammation, and is totally natural, odorless and non-toxic - and costs pennies!
