A trick for getting mittens onto toddlers
David, a former preschool teacher, has had plenty of practice getting mittens onto little hands:
Hold the mitten up with it open toward your child so they can put their hand in. Then you tell them to touch your nose through the mitten. They so want to do this that they point their hand straight into the mitten! Of course its up to you if you want a wet mitten actually touching or almost touching your nose!

Great! Now how do I get his thumb into the thumb hole!

Very cute trick! But I do have the same question as the comment above: how do I get her thumb in the thumb hole? I can't explain it to her (almost 2 years old), and the thumb hole is too tight for me to aim well enough!

Yes, and is there a way to convince a 18-month-old to not remove her mittens?

Try this rhyme, too, a cute chant to say together while dressing that helps make a game of things:
Thumb in the thumb hole,
Fingers all together:
This is the song we sing
When it's mitten weather.
It doesn't matter whether
They're made of wool or leather.
Thumb in the thumb hole,
Fingers all together!

I sing the rhyme "This little puppy went to market, this little puppy stayed home, this little puppy had a biscuit, this little puppy had none, and this little puppy cried "woof-woof" all the way home." For each "this little puppy" pull one finger into the mitten.
