I always learned: "The Spoon and the Knife were man and wife, and the Fork was LEFT alone." so you put the fork on the left.

We taught our girls that "food" and "fork" have four letters, so bread and salad plates belong over the fork while "drink" and "knife" and "spoon" have five letters, so juice, wine, and water glasses belong over the knife and spoon.

Clever! And much easier than learning it while learning the words for all those items in French, heh.

Roll and left also have 4 letters. As does "wipe" for the napkin, although that's a stretch.
