DIY microwave popcorn
I've always wondered if it's possible, but never Googled for the answer. Now I don't have to -- J. D. (Get Rich Slowly) to the rescue with Alton Brown's homemade microwave popcorn recipe. My only question: aren't metal staples a no-no in a microwave oven? (Ask MeFi-ers say folding the bag a couple times works just as well.)

I do this (with staples in the microwave) all the time with no problems.

According to Mr. Brown, the staples are not a problem.

I make this all the time, both with staples and without. (According to AB they're shorter than microwaves, so no problem). You just have to make sure the staples aren't in direct contact with the sides of your microwave.
Also: These are the old instructions! Alton Brown revised his instructions years ago, realizing that oil isn't necessary (the kernel pops because of the moisture inside the kernel, not outside) and doesn't help the flavor. Just put popcorn in a paper bag, stick it in the microwave, and it's done. (I do add some salt and sometimes melted butter after it's popped) Side bonus: friends are always amazed. :)

Yeah, staples are fine. As Alton Brown has explained on his show "Good Eats," and also in his book "I'm Just Here For the Food," you just need to make sure that you use two staples (no more, no less), and put them at least 2-3 inches apart. That'll prevent any electrical arcing to occur resulting from interaction with the microwaves.
And as Elizabeth noted, the recipe shown is old. You honestly don't need anything other than the popcorn in the bag (salt, butter, & flavorings can be added later). This is how I recently "air-popped" a bunch of popcorn for stringing on the Christmas Tree. Great for snacking *and* decoration!

I also do this all the time. Even one staple will hold the bag shut, and it is too small to interact with the wavelength of the microwaves. Also, a little piece of scotch tape works just as well.

I use a little but of tape to keep the bag closed any kind will do.
