Baby headphones help your kid appreciate his Video iPod
Pamela, member of Team FM among other things, has this travel tip:
I got my 1 year old baby headphones from Kidz Gear (review here) and converted his baby sign language and Baby Einstein DVDs into an iPod-ready format with AVS Video Converter. It's fantastic to keep him occupied on plane rides, especially at the beginning when everyone is boarding and he just wants to crawl/walk around. I think it helps that he knows and loves these particular DVDs. The bonus is the amazed stares from other passengers, who certainly know you're pulling out all the stops to keep the kid from crying.
This isn't the first time the Video iPod has appeared on Parent Hacks. Oh no it isn't.

I'm surprised people are still letting their one year olds watch Baby Einstein. Recent research has shown that Baby Einstein (along with many other children's tv programs) is detrimental to children, especially those under two. It causes decreased attention spans and hyperactivity due to the fast on-screen editing and change in subject matter. We have an 11 month old who does not watch tv and won't be until after 2 as recommended by the AAP. I realize that's hard for some folks, but our stance is that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. How about books or quiet singing on the airplane - or even music on the iPod - instead of tv?

I can't believe they are giving a video iPod showing *anything* to a one-year old. There's tons of research out there about the hazards of tv watching on little kids. Unplug the kid!!!!!! Have them talk and play with YOU the parents on the plane instead. What a great time for interaction!

Jennifer, you must have far more patience than most. Good luck with a five hour flight and a screaming baby who grew tired of the singing after the first 15 minutes in the air. And could you site where you saw that research on Baby Einstein being detrimental? I'd like to read that.
On the hack though, too bad the AVS converter doesn't support Mac. I was hoping to convert my little guy's various DVD's for th seven hour drive to the grandparents' for Thanksgiving.

Oh for pete's sake...as a commercial airline pilot AND the mother of 10 month old (who, by the way, has 20+ airline trips under his belt already), I advocate whatever it takes to keep kids occupied on a plane trip. We know you love your child, but to suggest you "read and play" to them for hours and hours in a confined seat on an aircraft is just silly. Please do not be one of those people who are so inconsiderate of others that you allow your child to kick the seat in front of him and in general disrupt other passengers all because you're afraid a little television might warp them.

Jennifer, I have not found any professional research stating that BE is detrimental to the growth of a child. On the contrary, I have ready many "reviews" that support these products. Can you cite your research?
Baby Stuff: A No-Nonsense Shopping Guide..is one of the books that supports this.
