TiVo price slashed at Amazon

I'm not sure how long this is going on, but the TiVo unit we have (TiVo Series 2 80-hour Digital Video Recorder) is on a BIG sale at Amazon. List price $299.99, now on sale, and after a mail-in rebate, the price is $49.99 and shipping is free.

TiVo is an essential part of our family TV strategy. If you're thinking of TiVo as a gift for someone, consider buying it now and stashing it in a closet till you're ready.

http://www.tivo.com/ has 40-hour Tivos for free and free shipping. The kicker about these deals is that you have to pay for a year of the Tivo subscription service. But you'd probably do that anyway.

One more reason to love TiVo: A FREE KID SERVICE that I wish I had had this when my kids were little. It's called KidZone (http://www.tivo.com/1.2.17.asp) and sets up a special, isolated KidZone section where you set your TiVo to recordONLY programs you choose for the kids to watch. They're locked out of all the rest - both live and recorded.
You can program the machine OR alter settings on the TiVo website, and can choose not only from programs you and your kids know and love, but also from lists of recommendations made by groups like Common Sense Media or Parents Television Council.

It certainly makes the TiVo even more valuable - as if Project Runway for the big folks weren't enough reason...

Another possibility for those a little more adventurous (and it makes a great project for older kids) is to build your own PVR/DVR using a project like MythTV http://www.mythtv.org/ .

Its a little more work but very rewarding and very flexible once you get over the learning curve.
