I have been traveling with my 18 month old son since he was 10 weeks old. I have gone on 1 hour flights as well as across country (east to west coast). The key thing I found is to teach your child to be entertained by things other than toys. He had so much fun playing with the tray table in front of us, as well as the letting him have the Skymall catalog. I have never toted tons of toys to entertain him & even when I took my laptop w/DVDs...he was more interested in looking out the window & just looking around the plane. Also, get them used to being restrained & emphasize that EVERYONE has to wear a belt whether in a car or plane. On our last flight he got his own seat and because he knows that when we (he and US) are buckled in, we have to sit like adults, he sat, looked out the window & entertained himself with the buttons on the armrest. You would be surprised how much they only want to do what you do! And cheering when they do something good is one of the greatest techniques...no matter what the situation!
