I read about dorodango (Japanese shiny mud balls) a while back, but then Edward pointed out that they're a great kid hack. Of course, he's right. Making dorodango encourages experimentation, persistence (it takes quite a while to make that mud ball shine), and is good, dirty fun. A Kyoto professor developed instructions even preschoolers can follow.
